Believe it or not but home improvement scams are real, roughly $36 billion a year is scammed from people in the United States. Unfortunately, these scammers are targeting older adults mostly because they are alone in their house.
How can you tell if a contractor is NOT reputable? Keep a lookout for someone who does one or more of the following:
Does their business by going door-to-door, explaining that they are working in your neighborhood.
Convincing you to make a decision on-the-spot by using high-pressure selling tactics.
Offer to do the financing through a lender they know and not a bank.
Only accepts cash and demands you pay the full amount upfront.
Does not have any contact information or cannot provide a business phone number.
Requires the homeowner to secure the building permits.
Does not have a website or any social media presence.
Cannot provide any reviews from previous customers.
A legit contractor, like The Basement Guys, will not be pushy when conducting our free estimate and can provide pictures and reviews from customers. We understand how important keeping up with home repairs or how stressful it can be. We are here to help fix up your basement, foundation, and/or crawl space by catering to your needs. The Basement Guys will not upsell you on services, most times we suggest potential clients get other estimates so they know they are getting the best service with us. We will even gather any permits or paperwork needed in order to start your home improvement project.
To help you feel more comfortable about home improvement projects, we complied a list of a few things to do to avoid a scam.
Do not sign any documents that you have not read or contain blank spaces to be filled in after you sign.
Financing should only be done through a trusted bank. Understand your payment options.
Do not give any money to the “contractor” the first-day meeting. Estimates are usually free and homeowners should get multiple estimates to be certain of the problem.
Do not trust a person going door-to-door.
Ask for references, website, and social media
Ask for more information about their business or experience. For example, asking how long they have been in business for or how many similar projects they have done in the last year.
Save yourself the hassle, North Canton, and contact The Basement Guys for your basement needs, we start with a free estimate! We work very hard to provide you the best service in a safe and professional way.
